Sixty-three-year-old Brigitte Hrdlicka, a retired hospital administrator, is one of the driving forces behind this inspiring initiative. She firmly believes that it's time to "ditch the idea that grannies and grandpas sit around doing nothing." Hrdlicka, along with her fellow retirees, have come together to challenge this outdated perception and showcase their talents on the fashion stage.

Sewing Club Turned Fashion Powerhouse

More than a year ago, Hrdlicka joined a sewing club for the city's pensioners, run by Irina Reichel. Reichel, determined to break into the notoriously closed world of fashion, has been the guiding force behind this remarkable project. The club's members, a group of ten "sparkling" ladies, have poured their hearts and souls into creating the collection that graced the Vienna Fashion Week runway.

Embracing Social Inclusion and Challenging Age Discrimination

Reichel emphasizes that this fashion show is more than just a display of style; it's a statement against age discrimination and a celebration of social inclusion. "Having these ten ladies take to the catwalk means taking a stand against age discrimination, but in favour of social inclusion," she explains, beaming with pride as her proteges showcase their creations.

Intriguing the Next Generation of Models

The fashion show was a resounding success, with the audience cheering on the senior models as they strutted down the catwalk. Fashion Week manager Zigi Mueller-Matyas, who advocates for fashion that includes everyone, noted that the young models at the event were intrigued by the initiative, eager to catch a glimpse of what their seniors were accomplishing.

In the audience, Verena Heger, a recent retiree, saw herself in the models on the runway. She remarked that they were "as beautiful" as the other models, not because of their physical appearance, but because they were "radiating from within."
